GENERAL FAQ's

What is FasTrak®?
FasTrak® is an electronic toll collection (ETC) system that allows you to prepay your bridge tolls, eliminating the need to stop at the toll plaza. The system has three components: a toll tag, which is placed inside your vehicle; an overhead antenna in the toll plaza, which reads the toll tag and automatically deducts the appropriate toll from your prepaid account; and video cameras to identify toll evaders.

Note: Specific vehicle models may require an externally-mounted toll tag. Call the Customer Service Center at (877) 229-8655 for more information.

What exactly is a toll tag?
A toll tag is a small battery-powered device, programmed with specific customer account information, which is read by an antenna mounted above the toll plaza.

Is there a charge for the toll tag or for opening a FasTrak® account?
There is no fee for the toll tag and no service charge to open and maintain a FasTrak® account, but you must keep a minimum balance in your prepaid account. Your account can be automatically kept above this minimum by authorizing regular payments from your credit card.

To establish an account using a credit card, an initial prepaid balance of $25 per toll tag will be charged to your card. To establish an account with cash or check, an initial prepaid balance of $50 per toll tag is due at the time the account is opened.

What are the advantages of using FasTrak®?
  • You don’t need to have cash on hand.
  • You don’t have to stop at the toll booth, you only need to slow down.
  • Your commute is likely to be faster, since neither you nor any of the vehicles in front of you have to stop to pay the toll. A FasTrak™-only lane can process almost three times as many vehicles per hour as a lane in which tolls are collected manually.

Can I use FasTrak® with my motorcycle?
Motorcycles can use FasTrak® to pay tolls by mounting their toll tag in a secure location. We do not advise you to hold the toll tag up while driving through the toll lane as it may not be read accurately. Also, we are not responsible for any lost toll tags due to the toll tag not adhering to the motorcycle windshield.

It is recommended that you use one of the following methods to secure your toll tag:

  • Place toll tag in your front pocket, as it can be read through the material.
  • Place toll tag inside a cycle net (somewhere on top) that drapes over the gas tank.
  • Leave toll tag in the glove compartment, if applicable.

Will my FasTrak® toll tag work on other California toll facilities?
FasTrak® can also be used on several Southern California toll roads in Orange and Riverside counties (91 Express Lanes, and the San Joaquin Hills, Foothill, and Eastern Toll Roads) and San Diego County (Interstate 15 and South Bay Expressway). It is your responsibility to know the toll rates and rules of each toll facility you use. State legislation ensures that all toll facilities in California have compatible FasTrak® technology.

FasTrak® customers should open their account with the toll facility of primary usage. Customers may be charged a service maintenance fee if it is determined that the majority of their toll activity occurs at another facility.

Can I use my FasTrak® toll tag to pay for parking at the SFO?
Soon FasTrak® customers will have the option to use their FasTrak® toll tags to pay parking charges at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) parking facilities. The program will begin with SFO’s long-term parking lot and be expanded to other lots as SFO upgrades their payment equipment in those facilities. Similar to the toll bridges, customers who use the airport parking lots will have the choice of using a FasTrak® lane or a non-FasTrak® lane when entering/exiting the parking lot. Each lot will have at least two lanes – one of which will be available to FasTrak® users.

FasTrak® customers who use a valid credit card for account replenishment will automatically be opted into the parking program.

I do not want to use my FasTrak® account to pay for airport parking. What do I do?
If you do not want to pay your airport parking with FasTrak®, you can either 1) use a non-FasTrak® lane when entering/exiting the lot, or 2) you can choose to opt-out of the parking program. If you choose to opt-out of the parking program, you are requested to check back to our website in June 2007 for detailed instructions about how to do so.
